In Honor of St. John the Fisherman The Bangus Festival in Dagupan City, Philippines, celebrates the city's renowned milkfish industry while honoring its patron saint, St. John the Fisherman. Originating in the early 1990s as a simple Bangus harvest display, the event has since evolved into a vibrant festival featuring lively street dance competitions. However, concerns arose regarding the overshadowing of St. John the Evangelist, the city's patron saint. To address this, Mayor Belen Fernandez incorporated biblical references, highlighting St. John's past as a fisherman and linking the festival to the community's socio-religious heritage.

Now, the Bangus Festival begins with a unique Easter Sunday mass, known as "Abet-abet ed Olin Inbilay," celebrating the city's patron saint and transforming the event into a joyful community thanksgiving.
