‘PAROL’ MADE BY FORMER DRUG DEPENDENTS PURCHASED BY THE CITY GOVERNMENT

DAGUPAN CITY – At least 400 pieces of ‘parols’ made by 39 drug surrenderers of barangay Tebeng were bought by the city government to decorate the city’s main streets, including the De Venecia Highway from Barangay Pantal  to Lucao,  during the entire holiday season.

Each ‘parol’ was pegged at P300 each.

Barangay Tebeng was among the first five barangays in the city declared  as drug-free by the Dagupan City Police Station which earlier implemented “Double Barrel’ and ‘Oplan Tokhang’ in the village.

The 39 drug surrenderers were trained on how to make Christmas lanterns under the leadership of Punong Barangay Helen F. Fermill  so that they can earn income for their families. This is in line with the program of the village for drug surrenderers called Unang  Hakbang.

Mayor Belen T. Fernandez assured the former drug dependents to look for outlets for their finished products. One of these is the city government.

Corollary to this, ‘parol’ will play a big role in the 2016 city fiesta where a program called   ‘Parol Stroll’ will be held.

Under this program, business establishments, associations, clubs or any group are urged to join the contest.

Each entry must have a minimum height of 1.5 meters and should bear the name of the sponsoring group. It should also be carried by one or two persons during the stroll.

Each entry will be judged according to creativity which includes craftsmanship and color harmony, durability and lighting. The best parol will receive P2,000 and a trophy.

Submission of entry will be on December 1 for the pre-judging while the final judging will be on December 2 during the Parol and Carol Stroll. (Joseph C. Bacani/CIO/Nov. 23, 2016)
