DAGUPAN CITY – At least 155 Balon Dagupan athletes were given different sports equipment by Mayor Belen T. Fernandez less than a month before the Region 1 Athletic Association (R1AA) meet on February 11-16 in Alaminos City.

The athletes received brand new sports shoes for athletics, baseball, football, futsal and sports equipment for volleyball, softball, baseball, futsal and football on January 18 while they were doing their training at the Bonuan Boquig Elementary School.

DCSC commissioner Finnela T. Sim disclosed that the Balon Dagupan athletes are now undergoing extensive training daily under the supervision of the Dagupan City Sports Commission (DCSC) and the Department of Education in preparation for the R1AA meet.

“We will continue to support the development of our athletes. The city government is here to support them and is ready to spend for them,” said Fernandez.

The city has allotted a handsome P7 million budget for sports program and development this year, from P2 million in previous years to support the training and the needed equipment of the Balon Dagupan athletes.

“Naniniwala ako sa galing ng mga batang Dagupenyo. Sa kanila ako humuhugot ng inspirasyon upang lalo nating mapabuti ang ating paninilbihan sa ating lungsod,” said Fernandez.

Dagupan is second overall for the last two years in the R1AA. With this unprecedented performance of the Batang Dagupenyo Fernandez expressed hope that the city will finally bring home the over-all championship trophy soon.

She then encouraged the Balon Dagupan athletes to go for more gold medals this year.

Fernandez has been supporting the development of sports in the city since her first term as city mayor and has invested on repairing even the gyms in several public schools in the city.

When the new government center is in operation, Fernandez hopes to construct a big sports complex for the Balon Dagupan athletes where they can have their training without the need of using other facilities outside the city. (Joseph C. Bacani/CIO/Jan. 18, 2018)
