The Local Government of Dagupan received the “Gawad Parangal sa mga Kabalikat ng Pangisdaan-Gawad Pasasalamat”, a national award conferred by the Department of Agriculture-Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (DA-BFAR), during the 62nd Fish Conservation Week held today, Friday, September 19, at the Luxent Hotel in Quezon City, with the theme “Pangisdaang Masagana, Sapat na Isda sa Bawat Pamilya.”
The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) conferred the award to Dagupan City for its dedication to protecting and developing the livelihood of fisherfolk, ensuring long-term growth in the fisheries sector. Vice Mayor Dean Bryan Kua and City Agriculturist Mae Ann Salomon accepted the award on behalf of the city.
“This recognition is truly for our hardworking fisherfolk, the lifeblood of Dagupan’s bangus industry, which continues to power our local economy,” Mayor Belen Fernandez said.
Vice Mayor Kua added, “Dagupan will continue to stand with our fisherfolks. This award strengthens our resolve to safeguard and sustain the bangus industry for the next generations.”
Dagupan’s SAGIP BANGUS PLUS Initiative has been central to its fisheries program, combining environmental protection and good governance with livelihood support, streamlined permitting, and aquaculture upgrading.
The local chief executive said the recognition proves that with the collaboration of government and community, a more resilient fisheries sector is possible, ensuring both food security and a sustainable future.
