DAGUPAN CITY – This year’s Belen Making Contest will be done in just one  area  at the Paseo de Belen along De Venecia Expressway Extension  near the CSI the City Mall during the month-long observance of the 2016 City Fiesta which kicks off December 1.

“This is a deviation from the traditional contest of belen-making in the barangays. We would like that the area (Paseo de Belen) to become the permanent place for the contest which is more practical and accessible so that everyone will be able to appreciate the talent of our barangays in making belens according to their respective interpretations,” said Epee R. Rafanan, 2016 City Fiesta Executive Chairman.

This year’s contest will be participated in by 12 individual barangays and eight clustered barangays.

The 12 barangays which will go solo are Pantal, Barangay 1, Herrero-Perez, Lasip Grande, Malued, Tebeng, Barangay II and III, Mamalingling, Lucao, Salisay, Poblacion Oeste, Bonuan Boquig, Caranglaan and Lasip Chico

Joining together as one entry are Barangays Bacayao Sur, Bacayao Norte and Mayombo; Barangays Pogo Chico, Pogo Grande and Barangay 4; Barangays Calmay and Carael; Barangays Tambac and Bolosan.

Barangays Binloc and Bonuan Gueset will still have to decide on whether to go solo or go into clustering.

Once the belens are up, at least 20 entries will be installed in the area, a site also near the venue of the carnival and trade fair.

The Belens (nativity scenes) will be lighted from 5:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m. every day from December 1 to January 8 at the Paseo de Belen and will be open to all viewers.

“The belen-making participants are challenged to think creatively and even ‘out of the box’. It is their prerogative on how they would like to decorate and design their respective belens, as long as the central theme – the essence of nativity scene on the birth of Christ – is reflected,” said Rafanan.

Each belen will be judged on their durability, stability and craftsmanship; innovation of traditional belen format, appearance and for the approach of the theme.

Winner will receive P50,000 for  first place, and P30,000 and P20,000, for  second and third places, respectively. (Joseph C. Bacani/CIO/Nov. 25, 2016)
