67.6 PERCENT OF 31 BARANGAYS IN DAGUPAN NOW DRUG-CLEARED

DAGUPAN CITY – Nine more barangays have been declared drug-free by the City Anti-Drug Abuse Council (CADAC) and the Dagupan City Police Station (DCPS) on December 8 in addition to the 12 barangays earlier declared as drug-cleared.

“We are nearing our goal of achieving at least 80 to 90 percent barangays to be cleared from illegal drugs. Right now, we have already cleared 67.6 percent of the 31 barangays in our city and more will follow in the next few weeks,” said DCPS Chief Police Superintendent Neil O. Miro during the signing at the City Museum of the declaration that the nine barangays are now drug-cleared.

The latest barangays declared as drug cleared were Bacayao Sur, Bacayao Norte, Binloc, Caranglaan, Lucao, Tambac, Mayombo, Lasip Chico and Malued.

Miro disclosed that what led to the declaration of these barangays was because of the collaborative efforts of the DCPS and the barangay officials with the support and cooperation of the Punong Barangays to eliminate drugs in their communities.

On the other hand, Mayor Belen T. Fernandez encouraged all barangays to work hand in hand with the city in enrolling drug surrenderers to the city’s Sagip-User Rehabilitation and Empowerment (SURE) program.

“Hanapin po ninyo ang mga surrenderers sa inyong barangay at tulungan po natin sila. I do believe that the very reason why they were into drugs is because of poverty. This is why we crafted this program to suit their needs so we can give them a brighter and secured future. In this way, they will never be tempted again to get back to their old vices,” said Fernandez.

SURE will not just help drug surrenderers in their rehabilitation program which includes drug testing and in-house rehabilitation for free and moral and spiritual formation but also on training them on the different livelihood programs of the city under its Project B.E.L.E.N. which provides free training.

“Lately, 22 of those who have undergone the program are now employed as contractual workers in some of our projects and in some private companies operating in our city na napakiusapan po natin na tumulong sa kanila,” added Fernandez.

Mayor Belen admits that only President Rodrigo Duterte was able to launch and zero in on the campaign against illegal drugs in the country.

“Napakaganda ang ginawa ni Pangulong Duterte at siya lang ang tanging nakagawa nito,” said Fernandez.

At present, only 10 barangays are yet to be cleared of illegal drugs but Miro is confident that more barangays will soon be declared drug cleared before the year ends. (Joseph C. Bacani/CIO/Dec. 8, 2016)
